What is Astaxanthin?
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid.
The carotenoids are one of the greatest groups of secondary plant compounds. Carotenoids surround us throughout our life and induce the colour variety of nature. The most known carotenoid is probably beta carotene, which gained its name from the carrot, in which it was prooved the first time. Much stronger antioxidant abilities for free radical elimination than beta carotene have certainly the reddish carotenoid Astaxanthin, which account for the remarkably colour of many birds, crustaceans and fishes. For example flamingos store reddish carotenoids in their feathers, but also salmons, shrimps and lobsters owe their colour to these carotenoids, especially Astaxanthin.
Which sources for Astaxanthin exist?
The richest natural source for astaxanthin is the microscopically small algae Haematococcus pluvialis. The pristine environment of Hawaii offers optimal preconditions for growth of this microalgae. The sunlight and fresh water foster a naturally high concentration of Astaxanthin.
Instantly after harvesting the algae is dried, finely ground to a powder and solved into oil, to secure a maximum of bioavailability.
When it is reasonable for you to use 12 mg Astaxanthin?

1 capsule includes 12 mg Astaxanthin, 10 mg natural Vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol), extra virgin olive oil and natural tocopherols.
The shell consists of modified corn starch (Trägerstoff), veget. glycerin (humectant), sorbit (humectant), carrageenan (thickening agent), water.

Information about the changed recommendation: In different countries there are various amounts of daily recommendation values for Astaxanthin approved. The span ranges from 2 to 16 mg per day. However in the EU the daily recommendation, which we are allowed to tell you, is because of legal reasons restricted to 6 mg Astaxanthin per day.
